Our dangerous footprint in the world.

If we take a look backwards in time, we can see how our species has grown in many aspects, like technology and of course population, there are more than 49 million people in Colombia. We need more and more resources from the nature to supply us. Have you ever imagined how do we impact the environment? Colombia is well known as one with more biodiversity of the world although this is changing, we have almost destroyed everything and it is time to start thinking about the environmental situation of our country. Currently there are, for me, three big problematics in Colombia, deforestation, water and air pollution, and destruction of wildlife, these need to be taken seriously.

Deforestation is a huge problem in our country, we cut down nearly 200,000 hectares of natural forest per year, mainly primary rainforest. It is due to excessive pastures for the extensive and unsustainable ranching, this is the biggest culprit of deforestation in the Amazon, livestock is responsible of the release of 340 million tons of carbon to the atmosphere every year and it increases the risk of forest fires. Despite this, there are other causes of deforestation, we also have the illegal crops, road infrastructure development, legal or illegal mining, and the use of African palm.

Every day we can see how much the air and water are polluted because of many manufactured and mining industries do not care about anything related with nature neither humans, they just care about money, I think it is due the poor environment friendly policies that our government has. But not only the companies are guilty of all, ordinary people with their lack of education havocs in streets and rivers.
On the other hand, we have the destruction of wildlife caused mainly for two reasons: illegal traffic of species and deforestation. It is sad to see many animals being locked in cages even with plastic to hide them from the authorities just to sell them for a great deal of money, is it worth destroying a life because of money? All living beings, are very important for the ecosystem. They are there to balance and live their life not for us, humans.
To conclude, this situation is very alarming, isn’t? We can see that we do not care about anything but money. When all resources and ecosystem disappear, what are we going to do? Are we going to live on Mars? Humans will definitely destroy everything there again. The only solution to this is that we need to start thinking and using our conscience and intelligence for better things to all living beings not for money.
